We Are All Caregivers

Left to Right: Bob Speelman, Ginny Nichols (RN, DON), Danielle Shaper (STNA), Rob Thorp (RN, ADON), Jennifer Gardner (LNHA)

July 24, 2019
NOTE: This story was taken from the blog of Foundations Health leader Bob Speelman. Each week Bob works at one of his facilities in different roles such as housekeeping, or as a nursing assistant, to bring A Culture of Care.

I spent the day at Batavia Nursing Care Center, our 120-bed facility in Batavia, Ohio. Jennifer Gardner is the administrator, Ginny Nichols is the director of nursing, and Rob Thorp is the assistant director of nursing. They are all doing a fantastic job at this high acuity ventilator and dialysis facility. The reason I was there was to work alongside Danielle Shaper.

Danielle is 43 years old and has been an STNA for 10 years. She actually began her career as an STNA at Batavia when the company she worked for shut down and relocated. I asked Danielle why, of all the careers to get into during this transition, she chose to be an STNA. She told me that her grandmother had a stroke and spent five years in a nursing home before passing. She saw the love and compassion that the STNA's and the nursing staff showed her grandmother and she knew when she was forced to make a career change becoming an STNA was what she was meant to do.

Working with Danielle was amazing. She speaks her mind, has a strong work ethic, yet everything that comes out of her mouth is rooted in love and compassion for her residents and her care team. The teamwork among the nurses and the other STNA's was encouraging to witness.

Throughout the day, we talk about her family, her time there at Batavia and what we could do better as a company to support our staff and reinforce our Culture of Care. The day flew by and at the very end (right before we took the picture for the blog) we had a chance to talk to Jennifer and Ginny about the day and the positive things I experienced with my time with Danielle. I also shared with them things that Danielle and I talked about that the company could do to make things go better for the staff (equipment, supplies, etc.).

It's incredible what we can accomplish as a team when everyone's voice is heard - and we are all working toward the same thing. We all have different roles but (Core Value #1) it's NEVER about the role, it's ALWAYS about the goal.

Our Culture of Care is alive and well - and spreading. It is the WHY for our existence as a company. At the end of the day, we are all caregivers. What are you doing to help the person next to you? Don't you want to wake up each day and go to work wanting to do good for someone else? Wouldn't you want someone to do that for you?
